Seeing the headline "End of Bangkok Traffic Checkpoints Promised", I did a double-take. The newly appointed chief of the Metropolitan Police Bureau announced that checkpoints designed to ensure public compliance with traffic laws would be scrapped. The problem for motorists was how to distinguish between an official police checkpoint and a fake one. But at least we had happy motorists, even if they were stuck in gridlock. One verse goes:He laughs upon point dutyHe laughs upon his beatHe laughs at everybodyWhile he's walking down the street.
